Pussy Riot at The Turf Club

Pussy Riot's Minneapolis debut, part of their US tour, featured a rally, hosted at the Turf Club.

From open to close the Minneapolis leg of their US tour, which Pussy Riot organizes as a rally, was focused on engaging the community of Minneapolis/St. Paul, and capitalizing on the shared energy of the rally to utilize in the ongoing fight towards equity, equality, and liberation.

As a proud fan and avid follower of Pussy Riot; following their earlier presence in US and world media, into their current day global presence. When I discovered they were planning a stop in Minneapolis, I quickly gathered contact details and sent a message seeking access to press passes covering the event. I was pleasantly, and dramatically, shocked when the reply to my inquiry came from Nadya Tolokonnikova herself. Not only did they graciously accept our request and reserve our space on the press list, but also sought to further connect -- hoping to gather local activists working intersectionally in both politics and art.

The show opened with Samantha Pree-Stinson, speaking important words, action measures, and a moment to recognize those, particularly black and brown, lives taken by police brutality. Up next came live dialogue between Tolokonnikova and Tommy Franklin, co-host of the "Weapon of Choice" (mpls based) podcast.

As the dialogue portion of the evening came to a close, the band's DJ began spinning a familiar poppy tune with a dark message -- Pussy Riot's track "Organs", off their 2016 "xxx" EP release. Nadya took the stage wearing the familiar brightly colored balaclava, which has marked the band's famous image since it's start following the 2012 re-election of controversial Russian president Vladimir Putin. What followed was the unfolding of a chaos of color, emotion, flailing, dancing, and strobe lights which absolutely electrified the audience and setting of the beloved Minneapolis bar/venue.
